Walk in Faith

"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him" -Psalms 34:8
Some aspects of faith are indescribable; they can only be experienced and known by doing them. Walking the streets of Erie can be a treacherous journey and one sometimes wonders if God is here at all. Then there is a small glimmer of hope - an act of kindness, a loving word whispered, a reprieve in the darkness that never seems to lift from this island.
So today, I encourage you, taste the Lord and sample His goodness. Lean on His grace. Take refuge in his care. We are blessed to find Him near us - even on Erie Isle.

Grace

As we called on Jesus' name and trusted him to be our Savior, we died to sin. In this death, we die to dying and pass from death to life because of our faith in Jesus and in God's power [Col. 2:12]. Our life is joined to Jesus, and his glorious future becomes our own [Col. 3: 1 - 4]. We are not under law, but grace. Let's respon to the gift of grace with a passion to be holy and to serve others. Let's open ourselves to the trnasforming work of the Holy Spirit, who changes us to be like Jesus [2 Cor 3:18]. We are grace-children, bought with a price! We are not in bondage to sin, but liberated by grace to be all God made us to be! [Eph 21 - 10].

Walking Honestly

Thoughts on Today's verse...
"Tell the truth the first time and then you won't have to remember what you said." That's a quote attributed to the famous Speaker of the House [U.S. House of Representatives] Sam Rayburn. That's basically what God's wisdom is trying to teach us in this passage. Be a person of integrity! Then, when someone finds out your secrets, you can feel secure knowing that you have lived for godliness. However, a perverse and deceitful person has to constantly worry that someone will find him/her out. There is no security or assurance in crooked paths, only the certainty of getting tripped up and caught. When the secrets of evil that have been whispered in dark places are shouted from the rooftops, those who have lived for the Lord can be secure in knowing that what gets shouted about them is said with the voice of God: "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

15 Minutes of Fame

As I spent some time on my own, I discovered a book in my Library and found particular meaning, as I have been feeling especially overwhelmed by the daily battles in Erie to bring peace and light to a dark world.

The following reminded my of the transient nature of life on earth and how much we make of what humans call their "15 minutes of fame:"

"Why are we so quick to forget God?...

I find myself relearning this lesson often. Even though I glimpse God's holiness, I am still dumb enough to forget that life is all about God and not about me at all.

It goes sort of like this...

Suppose you are an extra in an upcoming movie. You will probably scrutinize that one scene where hundreds of people are milling around just waiting for that two-fifths of a second when you can see the back of your head. Maybe your mom and your closest friend get excited about that two-fifths of a seond with you... *maybe.* But no one else will realize it is you. Even if you tell them, they won't care.

Let's take it a step further. What if you rent out the theater on opening night and invite all your friends and family to come see the new movie about you? People will say, "You're an idiot! How could you think this movies is about you?"

Now consider the movie of life...

God creates the world.... [[God operates throughout time in various ways and eventually...]]

...the climax: The Son of God is born among the people whom God still loves. While in this world, the Son teaches His followers what true love looks like. Then the Son of God dies and is ressurrected and goes back to be with God...

From start to finish, this movie is obviously about God. He is the main character. How is it possible that we live as though it is all about us?...

We have only our two-fifths-of-a-second-long scene to live. I don't know about you, but I want my two-fifths of a second to be about my making much of God. First Corinthians 10:31 says, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." This is what each of our two-fifths of a second is about.

Frankly, you need to get over yourself. It might sound harsh, but that's seriously what it means...

..maybe life is tough right now, and everything feels like a struggle....you can show the world that your God is great and that knowing Him brings peace and joy, even when life is hard. Like the psalmist who wrote, "I saw the prosperity of the wicked... Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure...When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me till I entered the santuary of God" (Psalms 73:3, 13, 16-17). It is easy to become disillusioned with the circumstances of our lives compared to others'. But in the presence of God, He gives us a deeper peace and joy that trancends it all....

It is His movie, His world, His gift."

[[Crazy Love, Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan]]

As I reflected on what I read, I was reminded of a scripture that has carried me through the many terrible circumstances I have encountered in my time on earth:

~Ne timeas quia tecum sum ego ne declines quia Deus tuus confortavi te et ausiliatus sumtui et suscepi te destera iusti mei~

"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness." (Isaiah 41:10)

Work, work, then relax :)

The performances of "Where the Wild Things Are" went very well and i hope that the residents found something to take their minds off their daily turmoil being stuck on this island. The actors did a wonderful, wonderful job and my thanks to each and every one of them for their hard work in pulling this off.

I am going to take a few days and stay in solitude and seek God's face about a few things.

Let The Wild Rumpus Start!

So much has happened since I last wrote down my thoughts.
My memory of it is sketchy and has mostly been filled in from people who knew... *ahem* know me.
Apparently I was sold off-island at some point. I don't know the details of how this happened and don't know if I really want to. I *do* remember what happened while I was away... and thank Father, He strengthened me to make my way back home - to Erie.
I have been told I was Chief of the Brigade; however, I have no memory of this. I have offered to stay on with them and recommended an old friend, Wayfarer, to lead them in my stead. I have rediscovered my healing powers - both natural and supernatural - and am using them to help the Brigade and the Island.
I have found a new calling though, it seems. I have been working to restore an old abandoned theatre, the Phantom Theatre and have gathered together a few residents to put on a show -
"Where the Wild Things Are." While I have had no childhood, being what I am, I have thoroughly enjoyed this book written by human author Maurice Sendak. I certainly hope this play, as well as some of the other events the Theatre can sponsor, will help to ease some of the despair in Erie - even for a little while.
So, join us, Erie Residents - come to the Phantom Theatre on August 1 at 9 am or 6 pm and "Let the Wild Rumpus Start!"

ROAD CONSTRUCTION

I came upon a book today, lying on the floor in the library... a children's devotional... and the words meant so much to me, I had to write them down:

From the Bible:

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Always keep yourselves united in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace.

Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. Ephesians 4: 1 - 3; James 1: 2 -4

Narrative:

"Hurry, Mom!" Sam urged. He was eager to get to his Little League game. "Can't you drive any faster?"

"I'm driving the speed limit," his mother assured him. Moments later, Sam's heart sank as the car slowed down. "Oh, there's road construction ahead, and traffic's backing up," she said.

"Can't you drive on the shoulder or go across the median to get off and take another road?" asked Sam, sounding desperate.

"Sam, you're going to have to be patient," siad Mom.

"I don't believe this," Sam muttered as his mother tuned off the engine. "Can't you do something?"

"No, Son, I can't," answered Mom. She added gently, "Sam, you're getting more upset by the minute, and you haven't been speaking very kindly to me." Then she asked, "Do you know why I turned the engine off when I saw we were going to be delayed?"

"So you don't waste gas."

"Right," Mom replied. "I didn't want to waste energy. But you're wasting a lot of energy getting all upset about something we can't do anything about."

Sam was quiet. Then he said, "I'm sorry, Mom. I'll try to be more patient."
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

"Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love." Ephesians 4:2

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I sit and reflect on life... it's ups and downs.... people coming and going, in and out of your life. Changes... not always easy ones... come all the time. Life doesn't travel in a straight line. We can rail and rant against the changes, throwing blame and accusation, or we can do our best to make the most of what we encounter - treating others with respect and kindness... not making excuses for others, but treating them with dignity.

This is my choice.. to speak the truth in love. I am not wasting any more energy.

Hope

~spe enim salvi facti sumus spes autem~

...for we are saved by hope....

[Romans 8:24]

Many times in life, we don't know what's around the corner. Many times we feel disappointed by life - we haven't achieved what we expected, haven't be treated how we feel we deserved to be treated, or somehow just feel cheated out of what we think will make us happy.

We sometimes get so caught up in wishing for things to be different, we do not recognize the potential for today, the joy that lies in who, what and where we are right now.

Acknowledging our present circumstance and learning to be comfortable in our own skin is the first step in getting ready for the future... and in restoring hope - hope in ourselves, hope in those around us, and hope for the future. Hope isn't always easy; trust me, I know how circumstances can press you beyond measure and beyond hope at times. Those are the times we need to reach deep down and find hope within us or reach out and ride on the hope of those around us.

Being who I am, my hope is in Father - "si autem quod non videmus speramus per patientiam expectamus - But if we hope for that which we see not, we wait for it with patience" [Romans 8:25]... and He has yet to disappoint. :) I was struck by a scripture recently, and it renewed within me the commitment to always hope [speaking of Abraham who Father promised a son when he and his wife were 90 years old]: "...who, contrary to hope, in hope believed.." Hoping is an action; I can choose to hope.

So, if you are squashed a bit by life - give it time - or like a dear friend would advise me "let it breathe." Hope can be found, if you seek it.

Psalm 43:5 (King James Version)

5Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

OOC Class: Being Angelic & RPing as an angel

Below is the content of a recent class I taught in the RP sim Erie Isle about rping as an angel.

Being Angelic:

This class will cover angels in their natural state, not fallen, but we will try to bring in some examples of fallen angels as much as we can. Given that I play the polar opposite of a fallen, a devoted servant to the Most High, fallens are out of my area of expertise. :)
The word angel in English is a fusion of the Old English word engel (with a hard g) and the Old French angele. Both derive from the Latin angelus, and thence the Koine Greek angellos ('messenger') used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew mal'akh (yehowah) "messenger (of Yahweh)."

The Bible uses the Hebrew terms "melakh Elohim; messenger of God", "melakh Adonai; messenger of the Lord", "'nai Elohim; sons of God" and "ha-qodeshim; the holy ones" to refer to angels.

Angels are essentially "Messengers of God, Yaweh" and there are debates about whether they serve God out of their own free will or if they are just an extension of God's will directly. These are some things you can think about as you develop your own character and background story.
The Bible doesn't give a hierarchy of angels except to refer to Archangels, also known as Seraphim [Seraph is singular], who are said to rank highest among the Heavenly Host and surround the throne of the Most High.

Angels have been known to be messengers, guardians, protectors, ministers, intermediaries on Earth. You will need to find out how your character best interacts with other players and what his/her goals are, which will guide your roleplay.

In the late fourth century, the Catholic Church outlined their view of the hierachy of angels [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01476d.htm]:

After Adam's fall Paradise is guarded against our First Parents by cherubim who are clearly God's ministers, though nothing is said of their nature. Only once again do the cherubim figure in the Bible, viz., in Ezechiel's marvellous vision, where they are described at great length (Ezekiel 1), and are actually called cherub in Ezechiel 10. The Ark was guarded by two cherubim, but we are left to conjecture what they were like. It has been suggested with great probability that we have their counterpart in the winged bulls and lions guarding the Assyrian palaces, and also in the strange winged men with hawks' heads who are depicted on the walls of some of their buildings.

The seraphim appear in the vision of Isaias 6: "1In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 6Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged"

The Catholic Church used thier view on Scripture and the texts of St. Gregory the Great to determine that there are nine orders of angels, viz., Angels, Archangels, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominations, Throne, Cherubim and Seraphim. They say: "That there are Angels and Archangels nearly every page of the Bible tell us, and the books of the Prophets talk of Cherubim and Seraphim. St. Paul, too, writing to the Ephesians enumerates four orders when he says: 'above all Principality, and Power, and Virtue, and Domination'; and again, writing to the Colossians he says: 'whether Thrones, or Dominations, or Principalities, or Powers'. If we now join these two lists together we have five Orders, and adding Angels and Archangels, Cherubim and Seraphim, we find nine Orders of Angels."

It's up to you to decide if you want your character to be one of a specific hierachy of angelic creatures. If you do, research that particular type of angel to understand how he/she may be unique to other angels.

Angels are *created beings* and have been purposely made with certain characteristics. Angels are known to take on human form as well as their natural winged state. Characteristics and the appearance of angels is pretty consistent throughout all world religions and folktale and myth. It is *always* recommended for you to do some background research on your race [google is your friend] and it will help you bring flavor and depth to your character.

1) Characteristics
- Heat
- Light
- Fire
- Strength
- Wisdom
- Courage

2) Powers
- Healing
- Discernment
- Empathy

3) Language

- Angel language

Folklore claims Enochian as the language of angels. Enochian is a name often applied to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of Dr. John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley in the late 16th century. The men claimed that it was revealed to them by angels, while some contemporary scholars of magick consider it a constructed language.

- Latin

Latin is traditionally the language associated with the Catholic Church and its rituals. Also known as a language of the learned.

- Greek or Hebrew

Original Biblical texts were in Hebrew [Old Testament] and Greek [New Testament], so these are known as Divine languages as well.

4) Tools

- Effects

Effects should be used sparingly or for special ocassions, one, because of the lag factor, and two, while angels *are* very powerful, you do not want to overplay their power and border on powergaming.

Some examples of effects:

- Poses & Animations

Some good poses and animations to use at key moments in rps keeps things interesting for all players. You may have one or two that become your signature moves.

Examples:
https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=856971

- Babblers

Babblers can be an interesting way to enhance your rp without having to use NCs to translate languages. You want to limit how much you use them, as if you are speaking in a way no one understands, it can get boring for other players, and you, as they cannot really interact with you if they don't know what you are saying. Usually, if I am using another language, I either translate ICly in local or OOCly in IM to whomever I am interacting with.

https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=214481

- Online resources

You can decide on various rituals, purgings, exorcisms, blessings, incantations, ceremonies, sayings, etc., your character might have, then use online language dictionaries or translators to make up NCs you can copy/paste from in rp. Researching different rituals and blessings too can give you great ideas as to how to enhance rp. I have NCs for blessings, exorcisms, purgings, and bindings, as well as a long list of statements in Latin that I can use for various types of rp.

- Scripture

If you are modeling your character after Biblical angels, you may want to quote scripture from time to time. A great resource for that is http://www.biblegateway.com/, where you can search for a specific keyword in verses. I used this when coming up with verses that were used as blessings during the angel rp of blessing doorways to take away the Dreadshift curse.

So, this should give you a good headstart or at least some ideas about where you might like to go with your own character. Do some research, ask around, watch other players - you can even get good ideas from watching opposite races, like demons - and enjoy!

The Journey

~Quaesivi Dominum et exaudivit me et de omnibus angustiis meis liberavit me~
May Father deliver you from all your troubles...

A long and winding road has brought me to where I am today... one with many twists, tricks, troubles and triumphs. Father is good and has enabled me to endure and to flourish.

Not long ago, I was a captive and each day only brought new pain.... my freedom nonexistant.
Today I walk freely among man and beast, trying to bring Light to a dark and seemingly hopeless world. Father has led me to Erie Isle.
I hope to share with you my journey, and pray that it will help you, touch your heart, or even just make you laugh. We are on this journey together... let's be good to one another along the way.
~Selah~

Philippians 3:13-14 (King James Version)
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
